Partial Birth Abortion
The average person is well aware of the Supreme Court decision in 1973 regarding Roe vs Wade. Many people believe since federal law permits abortions, there is little one can do to help stop abortions. According to this law, states are required to offer abortion as an alternative choice for pregnant mothers. However, each state constitution can regulated how and when abortions can be performed.
The State of Tennessee has legislation pending in the General Assembly that would make partial birth abortion illegal. This legislation has already passed the Senate but the bill is finding resistance in the House of Representatives. The people must support SJR 127 in order to force the House to vote and pass this important piece of legislation.
Tennessee has no enforceable law banning partial-birth abortions. This is due to a state Supreme Court ruling in 2000, but we can correct it by amending Tennessee's state Constitution.
